Hong Kong Impact of Social BackgroundThis month we look at high-performing education systems which are also notable for their performance on specific measures of equity. Hong Kong performs well on multiple measures of equity, particularly when it comes to reducing the impact of poverty and social background on student success. In Hong Kong, social background – which includes things like relative income, parents’ education levels and parents’ occupations – explains significantly less variation in student performance than is the case in the United States. Find out more about Hong Kong’s approach to providing high-quality education to all students in the Supporting Equity section of CIEB’s profile of Hong Kong’s education system.
