Walking on the Ocean Floor
Walking on the Ocean Floor

“I wanted to walk on the ocean floor.”

As the story begins, a boy growing up in Kansas watches his family pack up the car and leave the plains behind for the coast. One trip to the movies to see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea changes everything, and young Robert Ballard sets his heart on a single, seemingly impossible goal. With his family as his compass, Robert sets out to become a real-life Captain Nemo. But words never come easy, and long before he faces the challenges of the deep, Robert must navigate school, tests, and traditional expectations. Through it all, his dream of walking on the ocean floor keeps him moving forward as he learns to chart his own course, guided by how he sees the world. Now, facing the biggest challenge of his life, Robert must decide: can he rely on his unique way of thinking, or will he lose his way?

Created in collaboration with Robert Ballard, Walking on the Ocean Floor invites students inside the mind of a young explorer who sees the world differently. As Robert faces obstacles in and out of the classroom, readers gain insight into the strategies he uses to overcome them, and many will recognize their own challenges in his story. Striking artwork brings his visual thinking to life like never before. Chapter 1, The Rusty Old Boat, launches Volume 1 of Walking on the Ocean Floor.
