This brief builds on NCEE’s 2024 Framework for AI-Powered Learning Environments, moving from early questions about student access to a closer look at how AI is reshaping education systems and the world students are preparing to enter.
Eighteen months later, AI adoption is widespread but uneven. There is limited evidence of impact on learning, along with real questions about equity, implementation, and how to move beyond isolated efforts toward a more coherent approach. This follow-up explores what early implementation looks like on the ground, and outlines a more strategic, evidence-driven approach to integrating AI in education.
Our analysis is organized around three emerging themes:
- Future-Ready Learners: Learning in an Age of Knowledge as a Commodity
- Future-Oriented Teaching: Designing from AI Disruption
- Future-Fluent Leadership: Instructional Leadership in an Age of Continual Disruption
We end with a set of key questions to help school and system leaders think through AI implementation in their own context. Throughout, we take a practical, cautiously optimistic optimistic stance that highlights AI’s potential while emphasizing the need for strong leadership, thoughtful design, and a clear focus on amplifying uniquely human capabilities.
