In this week’s Tucker’s Lens, we hear from Ursula Renold, former General Director of the Swiss Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology, now at ETH Zurich, about one of the world’s leading vocational education and training systems – Switzerland. In the video below, Ursula describes how the Swiss vocational and technical education system is built on a strong primary and secondary education system where twenty-five percent of Swiss students who finish lower secondary school enter an academic program of study leading to university and seventy-five percent of students who complete lower secondary school attend a vocational education and training program. Vocational education in Switzerland is not a dead end, but a pathway to high skill, high wage careers. Many of Switzerland’s corporate leaders were vocational education graduates.
